KENTTEC is deploying insecticide treated targets in Counties of Kilifi (ADC Ranch in Galana), Meru (Meru National Park), Narok (Enoonkishu Conservancy), Baringo (Mogotio and Baringo South), Lake Victoria Region and Busia (Bunyula and Samia hills).
Insecticide treated targets is one of the most effective ways of controlling tsetse flies. The targets are blue and black biodegradable cloth.
From research findings, tsetse flies are attracted to colour blue and biologically normally land on dark surfaces or hide in dark places which is the reason for the use of the blue and black clothes. To their hosts, tsetse flies are attracted by the smell of urine and breath of the animal while exhaling so phenol and acetone are used as attractants to mimic the smells respectively.
The black cloth is impregnated with insecticides so when the flies land on it they pick the insecticide which has a knock-down effect killing them.
